Former Oregon governor Tom McCall is perhaps best known for the signs he posted at the border: "Welcome to Oregon. Enjoy your visit, then go home!"
But he was also that rarest of politicians: a Republican environmentalist. His pioneering land-use laws earned the honor of having the Tom McCall Nature Preserve in the Columbia Gorge named for him.
In the spring, these Balsamroot (Balsamorhiza sagittata) and other wildflowers make the preserve a riot of color, and a favorite of hikers.
